Gui

Al Gui (real name unknown) is the leader of a Singapore-based smuggling operation who appeared in the Season Two episode of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, "Cinderella and the Dragon".

Background[]

Little is known about Al Gui, not even his real name. He ran an international smuggling operation involving bringing exotic fish to various countries in Polynesia to breed and sell to wealthy clients. Al Gui was never conclusively identified or on strong radar by law and justice, but Taiwanese law enforcement knew him by legend as a psychopathic, merciless gangster who killed anyone in his way. Al Gui had international partners for smuggling and scouting, including Scott Davis, an American art dealer. Davis hired employees with criminal records who would never squeal on the operations and get cuts of the profits, and Davis was one of many international accomplices trolling flights to and form Al Gui’s hotspots and checkpoints to scout for flight attendants to drag into the smuggling operations. Davis scouted Kathy Hall and Jane Wicks, Kathy being seduced into a relationship with Davis. Kathy and Jane were the latest flight attendants who would be solicited to get the fish past security so they’d be passed on to Al Gui’s gangsters and partners. When the two women refused once Davis revealed his intentions, he kidnapped Kathy’s brother Will and held him captive in a storage unit in Baltimore, threatening to kill him if the women didn’t comply, as was per the gang’s habits of getting what they wanted. After three days, Jane and Kathy wanted out from Kathy not seeing Will again, hiding their latest shipment in a penthouse in Singapore the gang housed breeding aquariums at. When Davis found out about this, he called contact Han Bo Sheng to let the gang know Jane and Kathy were liabilities. When Al Gui got wind, he changed his plans and ordered their murders.

Cinderella and the Dragon[]

The gangsters jumped Jane and Kathy in baggage claim, choking Jane with the scarf on her uniform. Kathy escaped alive, and she was left the prime suspect. Al Gui orders a gangster to give Kathy a change in outfits and a disguise to lure her to Geyleng, where she’s to make the exchange at a warehouse with Sheng, as Davis called Sheng when he knew the IRT was closing in. The gangsters drowned Sheng in a tank and left him behind for Kathy to be set up again, at the same place where the thugs waited to abduct her. Davis was arrested and Will rescued by this point, though. The thugs try to best the location out of Kathy, but she demands to see Al Gui. Al Gui “apologizes”, saying Jane’s murder was an “unfortunate accident” and that he blames his own subordinates for being overzealous, which he argued was why he wanted Davis and Sheng out of the picture. Al Gui lied that was “honorable” and said he’d return her home and give Will back if she led him to the fish. She took him to the penthouse, and when he was satisfied with retrieving what he wanted, he ordered the two men to kill her. He feigns apologies again, saying there’s a price to pay for being on “his” island. The agents and local police storm the penthouse, shooting the two gangsters while Al Gui is swiftly arrested. He is incarcerated, and law enforcement begins work to tear his organization apart. Kathy, albeit with a lifetime ban from Singapore, is returned to America.

Modus Operandi[]

Al Gui conducted the operations his accomplices would carry out. He smuggled exotic and endangered fish species or breed and sell on the black market to rich clients. He kept international partners at checkpoints and breeding stations, having them target flight attendants to get the fish past security to smuggle them without incident. Al Gui would order murders to whoever stood in his way or outlived their usefulness, conducted by his men. Jane Wicks was choked with the scarf on her uniform, and Han Bo Sheng was drowned in a filled fish tank. They were both left at scenes where Kathy Hall was to frame her, then later lure her to be kidnapped. She was strung along by being given a disguise while she was being run around the city to buy time. The gangsters also carried sidearms, which Kathy and the police were nearly shot with.

Profile[]

No official profile of Gui was made by the IRT.
